Centro Cultural La Moneda and the Royal Danish Embassy invite you to discover the exhibition Once upon a time… In Denmark, which presents an approach to the historical development of Danish illustrations for children in literature between the years 1835 and 2022.
Taking as a starting point the work of Hans Christian Andersen, the exhibition displays selected reproductions from children books that invite us on a journey through different eras, themes, views and styles through the work of prominent classic and contemporary illustrators.
Structured on the basis of a timeline in which seven chapters or milestones are highlighted, the exhibition allows us to account in a simple way, in visual terms, the changes in form and content of Danish illustration, contextualizing them in relevant moments of Western history and in the themes that these books and illustrations have been addressing.
“Danish children literature is characterized by its lack of taboos. As in many of Hans Christian Andersen’s stories, current children literature deals with topics such as loneliness, death, abandonment, bullying, domestic violence, etc. This, thinking that girls and boys cannot be protected by silencing reality, on the contrary, a book can be a tool in order to face complicated situations in the life of the child”, explains the Ambassador of Denmark, Henrik Hahn Bramsen.
The texts and illustrations show a growing respect for the boy or girl as an active being whose thoughts and feelings must be respected. A respect that is also reflected in an effort to offer children books of high literary and artistic quality.
