Centro Cultural La Moneda presents the exhibition “Chilehaus: Atacama / Hamburg” curated by architect Alfredo Thiermann. It offers a broad and unprecedented view of the relationship between a monumental and emblematic building in Hamburg, known as Chilehaus, and the early 20th-century nitrate industry in the Atacama Desert.
Based on the history of this century-old building, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, the exhibition aims to highlight, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the power relations and global capitalism dynamics impacting territories and their inhabitants.
This research was produced and sponsored by the Laboratory of History and Theory of Architecture, Technology, and Environment, comprising Pedro Correa, Ella Neumaier, and Xavier Nueno from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. The exhibition is supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Chile, the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage, UNESCO, the Rural Architecture Biennial, and CONAF.
