Contemporary Author Craftsmanship

Knowledge, Territories, and Materials

Centro Cultural La Moneda invites you to explore “Contemporary Author Craftsmanship: Knowledge, Territories, and Materials,” an exhibition showcasing works by Chilean artisans representing the country at the 6th edition of the international craft and creation biennial, Révélations (2023) in Paris. The exhibition features pieces by Raquel Aguilar Colivoro, Soledad Christie, Egon Muñoz, Juan Carlos Orellana, and Rita Soto Ventura. Despite the technical and material diversity of their works, they share similarities in their organic character and close connection with our territories’ nature, heritage, and culture.

About the Exhibitors
  • Raquel Aguilar Colivoro (1982): A basket weaver of Williche origin living and working in the Yaldad community, close to 10 kilometers from the port of Quellón on the Island of Chiloé part of the Los Lagos Region. Initially focused on wool pieces, she later explored weaving with plant fibers like ñocha, manila, and junquillo, eventually dedicating herself exclusively to quilineja as a raw material. Her large-format sculptural objects blend Chilote mythology with local flora and fauna elements. Her work “La Marisca de Caracoles” received the Seal of Excellence in Craftsmanship from the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage in 2020. In 2023, she was selected to represent Chile at the Révélations Biennial in France.
  • Soledad Christie (1962): For the past + 30 years, she has lived and worked in San Pedro de Atacama located in the Antofagasta Region, where she connected with pre-Columbian pottery and its ancestral language. Trained as a graphic designer, she focuses on ancient ceramic production techniques like pinch pot, burnishing, and firing, combined with a contemporary perspective. Her hand-crafted sculptural vessels explore clay’s qualities to achieve rhythms, volumes, and organic forms. Her work received the Seal of Excellence in Chilean Craftsmanship in 2013, 2015, and 2020, and a UNESCO recognition for Mercosur crafts in 2014. She represented Chile at Révélations in 2019 and 2023 and at fairs in London.
  • Egon Muñoz (1978): Muñoz lives and works in Candelaria Alta, 6 kilometers from Pucón, in the Araucanía Region. His connection with the region’s forests began during his childhood, and he started as a craftsman in 1997, learning native wood carving from an older brother. He enriched his craft with agricultural technical training. His work offers an artistic view of wood decomposition, capturing changes over time and elements before decay. His piece “Fuente de Coihue” earned him the Seal of Excellence in Craftsmanship from the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage and UNESCO recognition in 2016. He represented Chile at Révélations in 2017, 2019, and 2023.
  • Juan Carlos Orellana (1958): Lives and works in Coya, Machalí, O’Higgins Region. Interested in scientific research from a young age, he also engaged in manual work, leading him to craftsmanship. With over 30 years of experience, his work spans two main areas: rescuing colonial everyday objects and exploring organic forms inspired by the marine world, reflecting a personal commitment to environmental conservation. Recognized as a Master Craftsman in 2014, he received the Seal of Excellence in 2010, 2012, and 2019. He represented Chile at Révélations in 2015, 2017, and 2023.
  • Rita Soto Ventura (1977): Soto Ventura lives and works in Recoleta, Santiago, Metropolitan Region. An artist jeweler and industrial designer with over 20 years of experience, her work blends traditional jewelry with centuries-old basketry techniques learned from artisans in Chimbarongo, La Lajuela, and Rari. In 2012, she founded the Lajoia jewelry school and twice served as president of Joyabrava, the Chilean Contemporary Jewelers Association. She has taught micro-basketry techniques in Chile, Argentina, Spain, and England. Her creations have been featured in various international contemporary jewelry exhibitions. Her work “Aros de Oruga en su festín de plata” received the Seal of Excellence in Craftsmanship from the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage in 2023. She represented Chile at Révélations in 2019 and 2023.
